Boston Calling local acts: Divine Sweater checks off goal as a Boston band

Ed Sheeran, Tyler Childers and The Killers will headline Boston Calling this year, but they are not the only notable acts taking the stage at the three-day festival.

The headliners will be joined by more than 50 artists, including more than 20 acts from the Northeast.

To highlight these local artists, MassLive will publish profiles on the acts leading up to the festival’s start date on May 24.

For Divine Sweater, playing Boston Calling for the first time “feels like a realization of one of the specific goals that we’ve had as a Boston band,” the group told MassLive.

“It’s unbelievable, honestly,” the group said. “We were all so excited when we got the offer to perform, and playing on the Red Stage is going to be incredible.”

Divine Sweater comprises guitarist Sean Seaver, drummer Chris Southiere, singer Meghan Kelleher, bassist Alex Goldberg and keyboardist Steve Lin.

Seaver and Southiere have been in bands together since going to high school in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Kelleher joined the band while she and Seaver were attending Boston College and Southiere was studying at Berklee College of Music.

Goldberg, who went to Earlham College in Indiana, and Lin, who went to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, joined right after the rest of the group graduated in 2016. Divine Sweater has been based in Boston ever since and its members have been to Boston Calling as fans several times.

“Our favorite memory would have to be the 2017 festival,” the group said. “We saw so many of our favorite musicians that weekend, including Mitski, Bon Iver, Lucy Dacus, Weezer, Car Seat Headrest, Mac DeMarco, and Run the Jewels, just to name a few.”

When it comes to this year’s lineup, Divine Sweater is looking forward to seeing performances from practically “every name on the poster.” Coming full circle, the band is mostly excited to “play to so many new faces” at New England’s biggest festival.

“It might be the best opportunity we’ve ever had,” the group said. “It will also be beautiful to see our family, friends, and fans who have supported us from our earliest days as a band get to share this experience with us. We are truly grateful for this opportunity.”

You can check out more of Divine Sweater’s music and find their social media channels by going to the band’s website.

Boston Calling will take place Memorial Day Weekend from Friday, May 24 until Sunday, May 26 at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston.
