Boston Bruins G.M. declines comment on Team USA’s care of injured defenseman

The care Charlie McAvoy received when he injured his shoulder in Team USA’s opening game against Team Finland in the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off has been a hot topic.

A report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman surfaced that revealed the Boston Bruins were unhappy with how USA’s medical team cared for McAvoy.

General manager Don Sweeney sidestepped a question about it on Sunday.

“We’re very grateful and appreciative to (team doctor) Dr. (Peter) Asnis and the medical staff that took care of Charlie,” Sweeney said. “Again, the care that Charlie received here is what’s most important from the standpoint of where his health is at now, and that’s all that really matters,” Sweeney said. “Dr. Asnis’ team, as I stated, did a great job.”

McAvoy suffered a significant AC joint injury and an infection in his right shoulder that landed him in the hospital for three nights. He was released hours before Team USA’s championship game against Team Canada. The defenseman didn’t play, but read the lineup prior to the eventual loss.

There’s no timeline for when McAvoy will return.
