Bomb threat made to Ralph Lauren store on Nantucket; Main Street shut down

Main Street on Nantucket, part of the island’s downtown commercial district, was shut down after a bomb threat was made to a Ralph Lauren store in the area Friday morning, news outlets reported.

The Nantucket Police Department received several bomb threats against the Ralph Lauren store at 16 Main Street starting shortly before 5:45 a.m. Friday, the Nantucket Current reported. The threats were made over the phone on the department’s non-emergency line.

The department responded to the scene, evacuated the surrounding area and shut down roads, including Main Street, according to the Current. Residential apartments near the store were evacuated as a precaution, Boston 25 News reported.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and the Nantucket Fire Department were also also notified by the department, the Current reported.

Officers searched the Ralph Lauren building but did not find anything unusual. The scene was cleared by 7 a.m., according to the Current.

Police are investigating the source of the bomb threat. The phone number that made the calls to the department does not appear as though it is from Nantucket or the United States. Law enforcement have “some leads,” the Current reported, citing Nantucket Police Lt. Angus MacVicar.

Friday’s bomb threat comes on the heals of another made over email last month targeting Nantucket Town Hall on Broad Street, Boston 25 reported. A courthouse on the island was also evacuated in January after it received a bomb threat.
