Bill Belichick explains quick handshake with Wake Forest coach after loss

Bill Belichick gave Wake Forest coach Jake Dickert a quick, icy handshake after UNC fell, 28-12, to the Demon Deacons on Saturday.

Dickert rushed to midfield to meet Belichick, but Belichick didn’t appear interested in exchanging a long message. So, what did he say to Dickert?

“Congratulations,” Belichick told reporters after the game.

After winning their last two games, the Tar Heels couldn’t keep the momentum going. UNC fell to 4-6 as it failed to score a touchdown and watched its playoff hopes fall further.

“Just not good enough in any area,” Belichick said. “On offense, defense, special teams, coaching, playing, we just didn’t have a good night and certainly was not enough.”

The loss also came after a week of speculation about whether Belichick would return to the NFL after the New York Giants fired Brian Daboll.

Belichick was the Giants defensive coordinator from 1985-1990 under Bill Parcells. New York won two Super Bowls during that time.

But Belichick remains committed to UNC after signing a five-year, $50 million deal with the Tar Heels in December 2024.
