Bears QB calls out coaching staff, says they’re the reason behind ‘robotic’ play this season

Justin Fields hasn’t felt like himself this season, telling reporters on Wednesday he felt he was a bit “robotic” and was thinking too much in the Bears’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.

When asked why he believed he was playing that way, Chicago’s quarterback didn’t mince words.

“Could be coaching, I think,” Fields said during his press conference. “At the end of the day, they’re doing their job when they are giving me what to look at, but at the end of the day, I can’t be thinking about that when the game comes. I prepare myself throughout the week and then when the game comes, it’s time to play free at that point. Thinking less and playing more.

“I don’t think it’s too many coaching voices,” he added. “I just think when you’re fed a lot of information at a point in time, and you’re trying to think about that info when you’re playing, it’s like it doesn’t let you play like yourself. … I think that’s the biggest thing for me is just playing the game how I know how to play it. That’s what I gotta get back to doing.”

Fields struggled against Tampa Bay, completing just 16 of his 29 passes for 211 yards. He also had two interceptions and carried the ball four times for three yards.

The schedule doesn’t get easier for the Bears, who have the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs as their next opponent in Week 3. But for Fields, he just wants to get back to not thinking as much when he’s on the field.

“My goal this week is to say, ‘F it,’ and just go out there and play football how I know how to play football,” Fields told reporters. “That incldes thinking less and going out there and playing off instincts. … That’s when I play my best is when I’m just out there playing free, being myself. .. I’m gonna go out there and be me.”

Fields has an important Year 3 ahead of him as he tries to proove he can be the Bears’ long-term quarterback. While the first two weeks of the season haven’t gone his way, Fields and the Bears can try to get on track in Week 3.
