DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Boston College women’s basketball team fell to James Madison, 73-53, on Friday afternoon in the Ocean City Center.
The Eagles fall to 4-5 on the season, and JMU moves to 5-3.
Jocelyne Grier (Charlotte, N.C./Winston-Salem Christian) came off the bench to lead the Eagles in scoring with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from deep in 14 minutes.
Lily Carmody (Melbourne, Australia/Butler) tied a season best with five assists and nine points, while Athena Tomlinson (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West) and Teionni McDaniel (Las Vegas, Nev./Georgetown College) tallied five boards.
The Eagles couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, hitting seven of their first eight shots en route to a 19-0 lead. All five starters scored during the surge that was highlighted by five 3-pointers, including a pair from Kayla Rolph (Great Falls, Va./The Potomac School) that started the run and five straight points from Tomlinson.
BC’s defense forced JMU to miss its first nine shots, leading to a 22-4 first-quarter deficit.The Dukes closed in BC, slicing the gap to four late in the second frame. An Erin Houpt (Danville, Ill./San Diego State) 3-pointer followed by a layup from McGee and a free throw from Carmody pushed the lead to 30-20. JMU hit a 3-pointer before the half, giving BC a 30-23 lead.
JMU caught fire in the third quarter, shooting 13-of-15 from the field while holding BC in check to take a 53–36 lead into the final frame. The Dukes maintained control throughout the fourth to secure the win.
BC returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Murray State.
