PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Boston College women’s basketball suffered a 70-61 setback to Providence on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.
The Eagles fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Friars improve to 2-1.
Lily Carmody led the way in scoring for the Eagles with 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor and 7-for-11 from the line. Erin Houpt came off the bench to tie a season high with 11 points, hitting all three of her shot attempts, including two from deep.
Athena Tomlinson posted a second straight game with 10 assists, while Amirah Anderson grabbed a team-best eight boards with six assists.
Carmody and Houpt highlighted the opening quarter for BC, scoring 14 of its 16 points. With the score tied at 10 apiece with 1:23 left, Houpt hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Eagles a 16-10 advantage going into the second frame.
The Friars responded in the second quarter, shooting over 55 percent from the field. PC scored 10 of the final 13 points over the last 3:34 of the half to take a 34-27 lead.
Boston College sliced the deficit to one possession after PC went up 44-34 following an 8-1 spurt started by a Kayla Rolph 3-pointer.
Anderson later capped off the surge with a jumper as the shot clock was winding down, shortening the gap to 45-42. However, the hosts held BC to three points over the final 3:46 of the third to stretch its lead back to 10.
Providence stayed in front of BC in the fourth quarter, never relinquishing its lead. Houpt hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to six, but the Friars pulled away for the win.
BC returns to Conte Forum on Wednesday, hosting Harvard at 6 p.m.

- It’s the second time this season Carmody has attempted 10-plus free throws, while she has yet to attempt 10 or more field goals in a game.
- Carmody is one of four players in the ACC averaging at least 14.5 points on fewer than 10 shots per game.
- Houpt (11 pts) and Jocelyne Grier (9 pts) scored 20 of the Eagles’ 22 bench points. BC held a 22-9 advantage in bench points.
