Barstool’s Dave Portnoy grants ‘big score’ this decades-old Mass. pizza shop

A Massachusetts pizza shop in the Greater Boston Area received high praise from the founder of a popular culture blog who is known for his reviews of pizza shops around the country.

Dave Portnoy, the host of Barstool Sports and One Bite Pizza Reviews, has not been too impressed with the pizza in his home state.

The Swampscott native said during his review of Belmont Pizza in Belmont that Massachusetts has “been slacking on the pizza.” But after setting foot in the decades-old shop, Portnoy instantly loved what he saw.

“If signs could tell stories or give scores, this is like a 9.8,” Portnoy said while motioning to the shop’s sign. “I like the old signs, the old lettering…I like everything about the vibes of Belmont Pizza.”

The vibes weren’t the only thing that won Portnoy over. The host also said he was overly impressed with the service he got after grabbing his “sharp-looking pie” fresh out of the oven. When it came time for a taste test, Portnoy was blown away that he had never heard of, or been to the shop before.

“I really like this,” he said before taking several bites of one slice in a single breath. “I’m glad I came.”

The shop’s aesthetic, top-tier service and pizza led Portnoy to give Belmont Pizza a score of 8.1 out of 10.

“Big score. Very impressed” he added. “Didn’t see this one coming.”

Belmont Pizza, located at 388 Trapelo Road, was founded in 1968, according to its website. The shop has a 4-star rating on Yelp, out of more than 100 reviews.
