After Nikita Zadorov broke his stick, Seth Jarvis broke the Bruins‘ back.
With less than a minute left, Boston appeared to headed for at least a point against the Hurricanes after a strong effort.
But as he tried to clear the puck, Zadorov’s stick snapped in his hands, and the puck dribbled to Jarvis in the slot. The Hurricane forward fired it past Joonas Korpisalo with 18.6 seconds left. The goal gave Carolina a 3-2 win and left the Bruins stunned as they suffered their eighth loss in their last nine games and dropped to .500 at 28-28-8 with 18 games left.
Boston lost despite outshooting Carolina, 34-23.
After Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, the Bruins will continue their road trip against weather teams as they head to Florida to face the Lightning.
Sebastian Aho put the Hurricanes ahead early in the first period when he scored the 10th shorthanded goal that the Bruins have allowed this season. He tapped the puck off of Mason Lohrei’s stick in the Bruins’ end and then beat David Pastrnak to it.
Aho cut across the zone horizontally and waited for Joonas Korpisalo to commit low before flipping it by him, 6:29 into the game.
Morgan Geekie tied the score late in the first when a rebound caromed to him in the left faceoff circle. He snapped it by Pyotr Kochetkov to make it 1-1 with 1:05 left in the first.
The Bruins got unlucky on Carolina’s second goal as Brent Burns’ shot caromed off at least one Boston player before bouncing past Korpisalo for the only goal of the second period.
Geekie put himself in good position and was rewarded for it again early in the third. He kicked Pastrnak’s centering pass to his stick in traffic, allowing him to tap it behind Kochetkov to tie the game 2-2, 1:14 into the final period.
Former Bruin Taylor Hall appeared to have put Carolina ahead with 1:15 left after his shot pinballed in off of Mason Lohrei’s leg. But Boston’s video staff alertly told Sacco to challenge the play for offsides. The officials’ video agreed, keeping the game tied.
