Author of ‘The Dynasty’ explains why he wasn’t surprised how fast Patriots fell after Tom Brady left

The New England Patriots haven’t been the same since Tom Brady left the organization in 2020 after a two-decade run of dominance that included six Super Bowl championships. Brady, meanwhile, went on to win another ring without Bill Belichick as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 2023.

For Jeff Benedict, who authored “The Dynasty,” which detailed the success the Patriots had and spent a lot of time with Belichick, Brady and team owner Robert Kraft, he wasn’t all that surprised to see the dynasty end once Brady departed.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” the author joined MassLive’s Karen Guregian to discuss his book, the upcoming 10-part series and the dynasty that was the New England Patriots.

“I think probably none of us should be in the sense that you’re taking the greatest quarterback of all time off your team at a time when the position of the quarterback is more vital than it’s ever been in the game,” Benedict said. “And so it shouldn’t be surprising that when you remove that guy from the chess board, the whole game is going to change for the Patriots. And, I mean, how do you replace that? If Patrick Mahomes leaves the Chiefs, they’re gonna fall off probably, probably big time. And so I don’t think that’s very surprising. No.”

The Brady vs. Belichick debate has been ongoing for quite some time. And many think it’s over now because Brady won without Belichick. But Benedict believes the 71-year-old coaching legend deserves a slew of credit because he “taught Tom the game” of football.

“I think that the reason that dynasty was so dominant was because of the partnership between Bill and Tom,” he said. “I think Bill deserves a ton of credit for that.”

The book, “The Dynasty” is now a docuseries that will air on AppleTV+ beginning Friday and will dive further into the 20-year run, the relationship between Kraft, Brady and Belichick, and what went wrong toward the end of the marriage.
