The approval of Northampton’s $137 million operating budget for next fiscal year may be thwarted at Thursday’s City Council meeting by a coalition of council members arguing for funding to prevent teacher layoffs.
Ahead of the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. inside of the Council Chambers at 212 Main St., members of three labor unions — the Western Massachusetts Area Labor Federation (WMALF), the Northampton Association of School Employees (NASE) and the Hampshire Franklin Labor Assembly (HFLA) — said they will be holding a rally in support of using more of Northampton’s rainy day money to prevent layoffs from happening at the Northampton Public Schools.
