Arts Beat: Valentine for Shakespeare, several varieties in new play festival

The 10×10 New Play Festival, 10 10-minute plays, begins its 13th award-winning performance run at Barrington Stage, Feb. 15 to March 10. The short plays run the gamut from comedy to tragedy, the serious, the comic, and occasionally, the outrageous. Brent Askari and Jessica Provenz are among the playwrights. Alan Paul and Matthew Penn share the directing duties, and 10×10 vets Peggy Pharr Wilson, Robert Zukerman, and Matt Neely are returning as cast members The festival sells out, even before the plays are announced and the cast is revealed. The Springfield Chamber Players (formerly MOSSO) has announced the inauguration of a new program to bring education and outreach programs into the community. This performance will be held at the Community Music School of Springfield, 127 State St., Springfield, at 2 p.m. on Feb. 11. The concert is free. Quartetto Mosso will perform William Grant Still’s “Lyric Quartette,” Rebecca Clarke’s “Two Movements for String Quartet,” and Antonin Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12, Opus 96, “American.” Springfield Symphony Orchestra musicians performing with the Springfield Chamber Players’ Quartetto Mosso include violinists Beth Welty and Ronald Gorevic, violist Carol Hutter, and cellist Yoonhee Ko.
