Artist cottages bring creativity and color to downtown Orleans

Tucked between Route 6A and Old Colony Way in the historic Orleans Village Center, the Artist Cottages at Orleans Market Square reopened for its summer 2025 season.

The cluster of eight shingled cottages serves as an outdoor gallery and studio space for Cape Cod–inspired painters, potters, jewelers, photographers, fiber and mixed-media artists; all carefully juried into the collective.

Visitors approaching through the “Pretty Gate” are greeted by a shell-stone walkway leading to the cottages’ front stoops.

Inside, each space offers unique finds, from hand-thrown ceramics to evocative coastal photography, crafted on-site by artists who share personal stories and demonstrate techniques, making for an interactive shopping experience beyond typical retail.

Beyond visual arts, the cottages are woven into Orleans’ vibrant cultural tapestry. The soothing “Copper Umbrella” fountain and artistic fish-shaped bike rack by Syd Ahlstrom turn practical elements into visual delights.

Food lovers can try chocolate drinks at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow café or comfort food from The Dancing Spoons food truck. On weekends, a farmers’ market brings fresh produce and local fare to the scene.

The elegant “Welcome to Our World” gate by Angela Rose offers a whimsical point of entry, and a large mural illustrating the century-old railroad station.

For residents and tourists alike, the Artist Cottages combine coastal charm, artisan talent and family-friendly events. When strolling through galleries, sampling food or enjoying live performances, the hidden gem in downtown Orleans invites everyone to connect, relax and explore.
