Massachusetts residents are in for a frigid Monday, with temperatures dipping well below freezing as an arctic airmass blows through — and forecasters eye several chances for snow this week.
National Weather Service forecasters say wind gusts will pick up to 30 mph throughout the morning statewide. A small craft advisory is in effect until Tuesday morning for outer waters and will end later Monday for coastal waters.
Under sunny skies, temperatures will be in the teens and 20s all Monday statewide. Only Cape Cod & the Islands are expected to break 30 degrees.
In the Berkshires, highs will be 17 on Monday with wind chill values as low as -7. Springfield and Worcester will see highs of 25 and 23 degrees, respectively, while Boston may reach 26 degrees.
Overnight into Tuesday, temperatures will drop further. Lows of -1 that feel like -8 due to the wind chill are expected in the Berkshires. Western, Central and Eastern Massachusetts will all range between 5 and 12 degrees.
The unseasonably cold weather will continue until Tuesday afternoon, when the shift to warmer air may begin and highs improve to the upper 20s and 30s.
However, clouds will roll in as forecasters eye the chance for snow on Tuesday night. The precipitation — which could come as rain along the coastline and on Cape Cod & the Islands — should be minimal, with only higher elevations of the state receiving dustings up to half an inch.
More snow could be on the way later in the week, as forecasters watch for another snow storm forming over the weekend.
