Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes unhappy with ‘embarrassing’ offsides call in Chiefs-Bills

Patrick Mahomes was fired up at the end of the Chiefs-Bills game after Kadarius Toney was ruled offsides on what would have been the go-ahead play. Down by three in the final minutes of the game, tight end Travis Kelce boldly threw a backwards pass to Toney, who ran into the end zone.

But a flag was thrown and officials ruled Toney was offsides — which negated the touchdown. Buffalo got a much-needed win to remain in AFC playoff picture, but emotions were high after the game.

Mahomes was irate and threw his helmet on the sideline. He was seen yelling at the refs and had to be held back by his teammates.

“It’s the call, man. Just in that moment. It’s not even for myself,” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “I know how much everybody puts into this game. To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I’ve played seven years and never had offensive offsides called. … If it does, they warn you. There was no warning throughout the entire game. And then you wait until there’s a minute left in the game to make a call like that? It’s just tough, man Lost for words.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was displeased during his postgame press conference, telling reporters he usually given a warning by officials when a call like the one on Toney was made.

“It’s a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place,” Reid said, via KCTV’s Jared Koller. “Nornally, if it’s even close, you get a warning. I don’t know. I didn’t have a protractor out there. I’ve been in the league for a long time. Haven’t had one like that.”

Photos on social media quickly spread that showed Toney was clearly offsides. Mahomes told reporters he knows referees are human and “make mistakes,” but it was still “tough to swallow.”

The Chiefs can’t dwell on it, though. Their AFC opponents continue next week when they visit the New England Patriots.
