Over 140 “American Idol” hopefuls entered the “Idol arena” round of the singing competition on Monday night’s episode. By the end of the program, only 62 contenders remained.
The event marked the largest elimination in “American Idol” history, sending home 82 contestants after the first round of the competition’s Hollywood week.
At the “Idol arena,” the singers’ task was to perform before judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan — plus their competition — without warning. The judges did not reveal the round’s results until after all 144 performers had taken the stage at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
Before hearing the final verdict, the contestants were sorted into four groups, two of which advanced to the next round. Some of the familiar faces who will remain on the show include Slater Nalley, Amanda Barise, Thunderstorm Artis, Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, Baylee Littrell, Victor Solomon, and Crews Wright.
“To be at this point, you’re certainly worthy enough to be an unbelievable singer,” Bryan told the first group, before sharing that it was the “end of the road” for the contestants.
When speaking to the fourth and final group, Underwood reflected on her time as a onetime “Idol” contestant.
“I’ve been here before, and I’m going to be really honest, I don’t know what was harder — being on your end of things, or being on this end of things, because I know the weight of our decisions and our deliberations, and I know it’s been so hard for you all going for your dream,” she said. “I’ve got some bad news for you — you’re going to be away from home a little longer.”
The 62 “Idol” hopefuls who remain will go on to compete in the “showstoppers” round, which will air next week.
