Alex Cora gives Boston Red Sox injury updates

BOSTON — Red Sox starter Richard Fitts is expected to make a second rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“As of now, he’s scheduled to throw that one,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s series finale against the Orioles on Sunday.

Fitts posted a 3.18 ERA (17 innings, six earned runs), 1.12 WHIP and .226 batting average against in three starts for Boston before landing on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain.

The 25-year-old made his first rehab start Thursday for Portland. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and gave up four hits and no walks while striking out two in the Sea Dogs’ 6-3 win over Reading at home. He threw 38 pitches (31 strikes).

The Red Sox need a starter for Tuesday in Milwaukee. Nobody in the current rotation would be on regular rest after Saturday’s doubleheader. And so there’s always a possibility Boston could decide to activate Fitts to pitch vs. the Brewers.

~ Romy Gonzalez appears to be nearing a rehab assignment. He’s been on the 10-day injured list since May 10 (retroactive to May 8) with a left quad contusion.

“He said he feels better,” Cora said. “We’re going to let medical make that decision. But the way he’s talking, the way he’s moving, he was like, ‘Man, I think I can play this week.’ But we’ve just gotta go through the medical part of it.”

~ Alex Bregman will not travel with the team on the road to Milwaukee and Atlanta. He’ll stay back here to receive treatment.

Bregman suffered a “significant” quad strain Friday. Boston placed him on the injured list Saturday.

Both Cora and Bregman said it’s similar to the left quad strain the third baseman suffered in 2021. That injury kept him on the IL from June 17-Aug. 25.

~ On Masataka Yoshida’s progress, Cora last heard he’s throwing out to 60 feet. He’s here in Boston with the team but could return to Fort Myers to resume his rehab there.

The 31-year-old underwent a right shoulder labral repair on Oct. 3 in Boston. He had a cortisone shot earlier this month.
