The Red Sox have 37 games left in the regular season and are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the top American League Wild Card spot going into Monday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Alex Bregman knows they can’t take their foot off the gas.
“Execution is crucial down the stretch,” the Red Sox third baseman said during an appearance on the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon. “We’ve got to execute our game plan in all three phases of the game. Baserunning, hitting, defense, pitching — that’s four phases. But we’ve got to execute in every phase of the game. And if we do that, I feel like we have the opportunity to be very successful.”
The Red Sox have struggled at times this season but have also shown flashes that they can be a legitimate postseason team. While there are still questions about their rotation and bullpen, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have shown improvements from the beginning of the season, while Garrett Crochet has been reliable as the team’s ace essentially all year.
Boston also signed 2023 Gold Glove first baseman Nathaniel Lowe to a one-year deal to provide some stability at the position for the remainder of the campaign.
The Red Sox haven’t made the postseason since 2021, but they control their own destiny at this point and can try to make some headway in the standings when they begin a quick two-game series against the Orioles on Monday.
