ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Ala. — An Escambia County sheriff’s deputy has been fired following the death of a K-9 left in a patrol vehicle after the end of a night shift, WEAR reported.
The incident occurred on Oct. 11 when the deputy, whose name has not been released, left the K-9 in the vehicle overnight, according to the report. The K-9 was found dead the next morning.
Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson stated that the case is still under investigation and will be presented to a grand jury for review.
“Our K-9s are invaluable members of our law enforcement family, dedicated to serving and protecting our community,” Jackson said. “Their wellbeing is of utmost importance, and we take this situation very seriously. We are reviewing our protocols to prevent such a tragedy from happening in the future. Our commitment to the safety and care of all our personnel, including our K-9s, remains unwavering.”
