Agawam joins push for local control over lithium battery facilities

AGAWAM — A week after neighbors packed a Planning Board meeting to oppose a lithium battery facility, the Agawam City Council added its voice to calls for local control over such energy storage installations.

The Agawam City Council voted 10-1 on July 7 to support a bill introduced in the Legislature that would prohibit the state from giving a permit to any battery storage facility until the local select board or city council holds a public hearing and approves the project.
