BOSTON — As he was about to board a flight home Wednesday afternoon after the Red Sox took four of seven from the first-place Orioles and Astros, Alex Cora characterized it as a “great trip” for his club. Four days later, any good feelings about the Red Sox have largely been wiped away.
After a three-game home sweep at the hands of the Diamondbacks — including a bad loss Sunday in a game they led 4-0 with staff ace Tanner Houck on the mound — it feels like the season is teetering for the Red Sox. The numbers say they’re only 4 ½ games out of a wild card spot with 33 games to play. But the reality is that a team that has largely exceeded expectations to this point is more likely than not to miss the playoffs.
