After release, former Red Sox 1B signs new deal with AL East team

BOSTON — A veteran first baseman who spent much of this season with the Red Sox has found another home in the American League East.

Garrett Cooper, who was released by the Sox on June 14, has landed a minor league deal with the Orioles, according to SportsGrid’s Craig Mish. He’ll head to Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore is the third organization of the season for Cooper, who started the year with the Cubs before being designated for assignment in mid-April and eventually traded to the Red Sox for cash on April 27.

In more than a month with the Sox, Cooper failed to produce offensively. The 33-year-old hit just .171 with four doubles, five RBIs and a .455 OPS in 24 games with Boston, making nine starts at first base and nine as the designated hitter. He was designated for assignment when the Red Sox needed a roster spot for Masataka Yoshida to come off the injured list after missing 37 games with a thumb strain.

Cooper is a career .265 hitter with 57 homers, 233 RBIs and a .759 OPS in 517 major league games over eight seasons with the Yankees, Marlins, Padres, Cubs and Red Sox. He was an All-Star in 2022.
