After 6 years of delays, Springfield seniors will soon be able to work to cut tax bill

SPRINGFIELD – A long-awaited tax abatement program that will give senior citizens a chance to work for 67 hours in exchange for a $1,000 rebate on their taxes is beginning this year.

The Senior Tax Work-Off program will be added to several existing real estate tax relief programs and a state program. In 2026, the city will also offer a new one for veterans through the state HERO Act and the City Council is working on creating a relief trust fund with donations from residents to help struggling homeowners.
