WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Red Sox have not yet ruled the possibility of Adalberto Mondesí suiting up for them this season, and, for the first time in months, there’s progress to report on the infielder’s rehab process in Fort Myers.

In recent days and weeks, Mondesí — who has missed the entire season as he continues his recovery from ACL surgery he had last spring — has ramped up to the point where he is facing live pitching, according to a baseball source. Mondesí is also running and taking ground balls; while the team hasn’t mapped out an exact plan for him to get into game action, one source with knowledge of Mondesí’s progress said it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in game action in a couple weeks.

The clock, of course, is ticking considering there are less than seven weeks left in the regular season. Still, the Red Sox still consider it possible for Mondesí to join their major league team at some point down the stretch if he progresses to that point. In theory, the 28-year-old could give the Red Sox a switch-hitting bench bat and plus runner in the final weeks of the playoff race if the team remains in contention. If Boston falls out of it, the club could look to use the final weeks to see what they have in Mondesí, who has not seen big league game action since April 26, 2022. At full strength, the Red Sox’ middle infield mix is a crowded one with Trevor Story, Pablo Reyes and Luis Urías (as well as Justin Turner, on occasion) playing shortstop and second base in the majors and Yu Chang, Christian Arroyo, David Hamilton and Enmanuel Valdez all at Triple-A Worcester.

Mondesí has spent his entire first season with the Red Sox rehabbing at the team’s complex in Fort Myers and has suffered numerous setbacks from the ACL surgery he had in May 2022 while with the Royals. At the beginning of spring training, weeks after the Red Sox acquired Mondesí and infielder Angel Pierre from Kansas City for lefty reliever Josh Taylor, team decision-makers believed he could be ready for Opening Day. That wasn’t the case, and Mondesí’s lack of progress led the club to place him on the 60-day injured list to start the season. By mid-June, he was shut down from all baseball activities.

Mondesí shared a video of himself working out at JetBlue Park last week but Sox manager Alex Cora offered no update on his status. The former Royal is making $3.05 million this season and is set to hit free agency after the year.
