As you know, there has been significant discussion about the location of the new police station. Two locations have been proposed and have promising qualities; however, both are not without drawbacks. The South Middle School location, while currently owned by the city of Westfield, presents issues with decreased green space for city residents and significant issues with traffic flow patterns on South Maple Street. The site of the former Blessed Sacrament church, while having a more desirable location, would require significantly more financial contribution and would require several properties to be claimed by eminent domain and demolition of a historical building. I have had numerous conversations with many residents both within Ward 2, as well as the other wards, who have severe concerns with both sites. Having toured both locations and having heard the concerns of my constituents, I now share their opposition to both sites.
I believe there is another option. The Newberry site in downtown Westfield represents a potential location that marries the benefits and mitigates the concerns of the two previously mentioned sites.
Having the new police station in downtown would promote the continued economic development of the downtown area, would capitalize on the existing infrastructure in place and is already under city ownership.
