Dejounte Murray injury: Pelicans guard tears Achilles (report)

The Pelicans have dealt with plenty of injuries this season, and unfortunately, Dejounte Murray is just the latest casualty. The guard had to leave Friday’s game against the Celtics early due to a non-contact injury.

Murray has suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon, per NBA insider Chris Haynes. Murray left the arena early Friday on crunches and in a boot, according to the NBC Sports Boston broadcast.

On the play where the injury happened, Murray went up for a rebound off his own miss. But after securing the ball, he immediately crumpled to the floor. Murray eventually left the game with 3:51 left in the first quarter. Initially, he hobbled off the court under his own power but needed help returning to the locker room afterwards.

In looking at the replay, the initial fear appeared to be an Achilles injury. He immediately grabbed at his right ankle area. While leaving the court, Murray could stand but didn’t look like he could push off that right foot. Murray finished Friday’s game with four points, five rebounds and three turnovers, shooting 2-for-6 from the field.

It’s an unfortunate injury for Murray for a struggling Pelicans squad. While New Orleans pushed the reigning champion Celtics down the stretch, the loss put the Pelicans at just 12-37 on the season. Murray came into Friday’s game averaging 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.6 assists in 30 games this season.
