Drake Maye made the play of the day — the play of the season, really — to send the game to overtime. But the New England Patriots rookie was still kicking himself for the way the game ended.
The Patriots’ chances were dashed in overtime after Maye tried to go for a home run ball to Kayshon Boutte, only to be intercepted by Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker, ending the game.
What happened? Maye had a blunt assessment.
First down, I see the safety, I think we‘re throwing into the wind, I‘ve got to put some more on it. Just a dumb decision, something you‘d like to have back, especially in that situation,” he said.

Maye noted the Patriots’ field position — their own 40 — and how the team could have setup for a game-tying field goal. He admitted his aggressive throw took away that possibility.
“Sometimes the best play is throw it away, just a bad decision on my part,” he said.
It was an up-and-down day for Maye, who threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on a strip sack. Still, Maye was the one bright spot on the Patriots offense.
The rookie went 29-of-41 passing for 206 yards and 1 touchdown. But his biggest contributions came on the ground. Maye ran eight times for 95 of the Patriots’ 110 rushing yards on the day.
The Patriots had a shot to complete the miracle comeback Sunday in Nashville. However, they were ultimately done in by their mistakes.
Maye hopes to take those mistakes and build toward the future.
“We gotta go back and learn from it, especially me,” he said. “I gotta take advantage of these reps that I’m getting in the game and play better.”
