BWC: Man approaches Md. officers, bystanders with grill fork before fatal OIS

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Newly released body-worn camera footage shows the moment a Montgomery County police officer fatally shot a man after repeatedly instructing him to drop what was initially believed to be a knife WUSA reported.

The shooting occurred on Sept. 21 in Silver Spring where officers were responding to a reported assault, according to the report. The footage shows the officer arriving to find a group of people in a yard, visibly anxious. The officer attempts to calm the group before noticing a man walking from behind a house holding a sharp object.

As the man approaches a person walking a dog, the group starts yelling, prompting the officer to draw his gun and order the man to “drop the knife.” The man continues walking toward the officer and the group, pointing to a cut on his head while saying something inaudible. Despite repeated commands to drop the object, the man does not comply.

As the man continued approaching the group, the officer fired several shots bringing him to the ground. He later died at the scene, according to the report.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
