Red Sox fire three coaches but principals returning to staff

There will be some turnover to the Red Sox’ coaching staff for 2025.

First base coach Andy Fox, bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Rey Fuentes and bullpen catcher/coach Mani Martinez will not return to the team, multiple sources confirmed.

In addition, strength and conditioning coach Ben Chadwick will also not return.

The dismissals were first reported by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

At the team’s end-of-season Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow had said the team would be evaluating the staff during meetings.

Principal members of the staff — pitching coach Andrew Bailey, hitting coach Pete Fatse, third base coach/outfielder and baserunning instructor Kyle Hudson game planning coordinator, catching instructor Jason Varitek and bench coach Ramon Vazquez — are expected to return in 2025, along with assistant hitting coach Ben Rosenthal, an industry source said.

Fox had been part of the organization for 14 years. The 2024 season was his third on the major league staff. As the team’s infield instructor, Fox may have paid the price for the team’s frequently sloppy infield defense. As a team, the Red Sox allowed the most unearned runs in either league.

Ortiz just completed his 10th season as a major league coach and third with the Sox.

Walker had spent 16 seasons with the Red Sox and fifth on the major league coaching staff, for which he served as assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach. Boston’s bullpen was a major issue in its second-half collapse; Red Sox relievers led all of baseball in blown saves after the All-Star break.
