Red Sox rookie reliever on his way to Detroit to join club, per source

DETROIT — Rookie reliever Chase Shugart is on his way to Detroit to join the Red Sox as a September call-up, according to a source.

He will be added to Boston’s active roster Sunday when the calendar turns to September. MLB rosters expand from 26 players to 28 players during September.

Second baseman Enmanuel Valdez, who traveled to Detroit earlier Saturday, also will be added as a September call-up.

Shugart, a 27-year-old righty, received his first major league promotion Aug. 12. He appeared in one game for Boston (Aug. 15 at Baltimore) during a four-day stint in the big leagues. He allowed one run, three hits and no walks while striking out two in 2 ⅔ innings against the Orioles.

He pitched extremely well after being optioned back to Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 16. He tossed 5 ⅔ scoreless innings over four outings. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out six.
