Flags will be lowered to half staff Saturday to honor a Pittsfield 29-year-old who died unexpectedly on Sunday.
Xavier Powell enlisted in the Army National Guard and was stationed in Army Aviation Support Facility 1 at Joint Base Cape Cod as a helicopter mechanic, according to his obituary. He was ranked as specialist and a veteran.
“Xavier was most proud of being in the military,” the obituary reads.
Gov. Maura Healey ordered the U.S. flag and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, Aug. 24 in his honor.
Powell enjoyed photography, traveling across the country, vacationing in Gloucester with his grandparents, riding his motorcycle, camping, running, campfires, attending concerts and festivals, and collecting vintage items, according to his obituary.
A celebration of Powell’s life will be held at Zucchini’s Restaurant on North Street in Pittsfield at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The family is asking for donations to be made in Powell’s memory to Wounded Warrior.
