Kristaps Porzingis injury status continues as complicated decision

BOSTON — As the Celtics look to close out the Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, every extra day of rest is seemingly important for big man Kristaps Porzingis. While Porzingis was technically active for the Game 4 blowout loss, C’s coach Joe Mazzulla said he would only play in specific circumstances.

So at this point, it’s unclear if Porzingis is actually able to play meaningful minutes due to the rare left leg injury he suffered in Game 2. There were two days off between Games 4 and 5, so that should at least be a small boost. But it’s a complicated decision for the Celtics as they lead the Finals 3-1 over the Mavs.

“I haven’t talked to him yet,” Mazzulla said before C’s practice Saturday. “I’m not sure kind of where he’s at. But he’s trying and doing everything he can to try to put himself in position to be out there. I know that for sure.”

Another factor to consider for Porzingis, too, is that even if he is able to play, it’ll be on a minutes restriction. When Porzingis made his return from his calf injury, he came off the bench in Games 1 and 2 of the series. Of course, Porzingis stole the show in those games as he quickly made an impact despite the lengthy layoff.

But that’s another important thing to consider when it comes to Porzingis. He’s not just necessarily dealing with this rare left foot injury, which has kept him out of the past two games. The Celtics have a long-term investment in Porzingis’ health beyond this season, so rushing him back also isn’t wise if there’s any chance of re-injury.

If there are any positives, the Celtics know how to play and win without Porzingis, just as they have all playoffs. Porzingis has not only missed plenty of time during the playoffs, but the C’s were also cautious with him throughout the regular season. It’s why they’ve been able to so seamlessly play without Porzingis and insert Al Horford back into the starting lineup.

Regardless, the Celtics are still in the driver’s seat despite the blowout Game 4 loss as they hold the 3-1 series lead. They have the chance to finish off the Mavs in Game 5 on their home court, which would be a treat for the fans in attendance. Thus far, the Celtics haven’t felt too much pressure as they’ve stuck to their motto of “however long it takes” to get to Banner No. 18. It’s just unclear how much Porzingis will be able to contribute in Game 5, set for 8:30 p.m. Monday at TD Garden.
