Red Sox star prospect homers in return from hit by pitch earlier in series

Top Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony homered in Double-A Portland’s 10-5 win over Reading on Sunday. He was playing for the first time since leaving the Sea Dogs’ game Wednesday after he got hit in the elbow with a pitch.

Anthony, who MassLive ranks No. 1 on its Red Sox Top 25 prospect list, went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts as the leadoff hitter. The 20-year-old center fielder is batting .271 with a .384 on-base percentage, .480 slugging percentage, .864 OPS, six homers, 15 doubles, two triples, 19 RBIs, 31 runs, 30 walks and 55 strikeouts in 49 games (211 plate appearances).

Anthony missed time in late May and early June with a rib issue. He returned from that injury June 5. He has gone 12-for-29 (.414 batting average) with a .485 on-base percentage, .931 slugging percentage, 1.416 OPS, three homers, four doubles, one triple, six RBIs, 11 runs, one walk and four strikeouts in eight games during June

Red Sox prospects Kyle Teel and Blaze Jordan also homered in Portland’s win Sunday.

Teel went 3-for-5 with three runs. The 2023 first round draft pick is batting .313 with a .410 on-base percentage, .487 slugging percentage, .897 OPS, seven homers, 13 doubles, 40 RBIs, 44 runs, 29 walks and 55 strikeouts in 50 games (229 plate appearances) for Portland.

Jordan went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. The 21-year-old slugger is batting .293 with a .346 on-base percentage, .455 slugging percentage, .801 OPS, four homers, eight doubles, 24 RBIs, 14 runs, seven walks and 13 strikeouts in 31 games (136 plate appearances).

Jordan, Boston’s third round pick in 2020, returned this past week after spending a month on the IL with a fractured finger. He went 8-for-24 (.333) with a .360 on-base percentage, .625 slugging percentage, .985 OPS, two homers, one double, eight RBIs, two runs, one steal, one walk and two strikeouts in five games.

~ Bryan Mata began another rehab assignment Sunday. He pitched 2 scoreless innings for Double-A Portland. He allowed one hit and no walks while striking out two. Mata has been on the IL all season with a right hamstring strain. He was pulled off his first rehab start with a lat issue.

~ Kristian Campbell went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and three runs in Portland’s win. The 21-year-old is 20-for-51 (.392 batting average) with a .456 on-base percentage, .667 slugging percentage, 1.123 OPS, two homers, six doubles, one triple, 13 runs, 10 RBIs, five walks and 10 strikeouts in 12 games for Portland since being promoted from High-A Greenville.

~ Lefty Bailey Horn, who is on Boston’s 40-man roster, threw a scoreless inning in Triple-A Worcester’s 12-6 win over Buffalo on Sunday. He has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings (1.29 ERA) over 11 outings since Boston acquired him from the White Sox on April 30.

~ Jhostynxon Garcia went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs in High-A Greenville’s 11-10 loss to Asheville on Sunday. The 21-year-old center fielder is batting .273 with a .370 on-base percentage, .573 slugging percentage, .943 OPS, 11 homers, eight doubles, one triple, 28 RBIs, 31 runs, 19 walks, 39 strikeouts and 14 steals in 38 games (165 plate appearances).
