CINCINNATI — Social media videos show an officer responding after a fan ran onto the field during the Reds-Guardians game to do a back flip, the Associated Press reported.
Video footage shows the fan running towards Cleveland center fielder Tyler Freeman, appearing to say something to him, before heading back to left field. As a Cincinnati Police Department officer approached the fan in the outfield, the fan did a backflip and attempted to flee. The officer then used a TASER to subdue him.
The fan fell to the ground and was quickly surrounded by more police officers before being taken into custody, according to the report.
Witnesses reported that Hendon, wearing a Reds jersey, attempted to fist-bump the Guardians player before being stopped, according to the report. He was taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center and booked within an hour. He faces charges of criminal trespassing and obstructing official business. Hendon pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance bond. He is currently banned from the stadium.
Johnny Bench, a 14-time all-star and two-time National League MVP, shared his appreciation in a viral X.com post. Bench, a 1989 inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame wrote, “Great catch Cincinnati’s finest!” Bench’s signed image has been viewed more than 876,000 times.
Lt. Jonathan Cunningham, public information officer for the Cincinnati Police Department, stated that the use of the TASER is under investigation, as is standard procedure for any use of force, according to the report.
“The officers’ quick response allowed the game to continue uninterrupted for the players and fans in attendance,” Cunningham said.
