Old refrigerator in basement caused hazmat situation in Mass., officials say

A man and a boy were taken to the hospital after an old refrigerator in their basement began leaking sulfur dioxide, the New Bedford Fire Department said.

The fire department was originally called to 341 Davis St. for an unknown chemical leaking inside the home at 6:16 p.m. on May 30. Officials found an old 1940′s refrigerator leaking refrigerant, which included sulfur dioxide. This was commonly used in refrigerators from that time, according to the fire department.

Fire crews and hazmat technicians removed the refrigerator from the basement and ventilated the home with positive pressure fans. The fire department said this took an “extended time due to the gas being heavier than air.”

The fire department shared pictures of the vintage refrigerator outside on the yard.
