Ad campaign assails utility funding ‘pet projects,’ won’t disclose donors

WESTFIELD — The leader of a group campaigning against Whip City Fiber’s pledge to fund an $11 million athletic fields project said his concern is using subscriber fees from other towns for “pet projects” in Westfield.

Christopher Thrasher of Westport, policy director for Mass Priorities, last week launched a billboard, digital and cable television advertising campaign against the project, which would build an artificial turf stadium and renovate two other fields on the Westfield High School campus, and is slated for a vote at the Westfield City Council meeting tonight.

“The fundamental issue for Mass Priorities is that it seems that it is way outside the mandate of a municipal utility to be funding these ballfields in Westfield, especially on the backs of subscribers outside of Westfield. It really should give municipalities pause to partner with Whip City Fiber, if this is how funds from subscribers are going to be spent in the future,” Thrasher said on Wednesday morning.
