Boston-bound JetBlue flight nearly collides on runway in Washington, D.C.

A Boston-bound JetBlue flight nearly collided with a Southwest Airlines flight on the runway at Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington D.C. Thursday morning, officials said.

JetBlue Flight 1554 was beginning its takeoff roll on a runway at the airport when an air traffic controller instructed a Southwest Airlines flight heading to Orlando, Fla. to cross the runway, the FAA said in a statement. The near-miss occurred around 7:41 a.m. Thursday.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

The Southwest Airlines Flight, number 2937, departed just three minutes later than its scheduled departure time despite the incident, according to the online flight tracker FlightAware.

Those on board the JetBlue flight were not as lucky.

That flight was delayed nearly six hours following the incident, leaving Washington, D.C. at around 1:30 p.m. rather than its scheduled departure time, 7:35 a.m., according to FlightWare.
