Whether it’s the screeching of the Green Line or the constant car honking, it can often be hard to find some peace and quiet in Boston. But just how noisy is Beantown compared to the rest of the country?
According to a new study by Steel Guard Safety, a manufacturer of noise control products, Boston is the fifth noisiest city in the United States.
The study analyzed key metrics related to noise pollution throughout the 100 largest cities nationwide.
It also utilized data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation, the Federal Transit Administration and more, according to a spokesperson with Steel Guard Safety.
The Bay State’s capital city secured the spot on the list mostly for having a significant volume of public transit vehicles as well as high traffic density on its roads. Here are some of the study highlights for Boston:
- The population density is 13,442 residents per square mile
- The daily commuter traffic per square mile is 2,687 vehicles
- Boston sees an average of 925 flights per day
- There are 65 public transit vehicles per square mile
- There are 546.3 construction permits per 100,000 residents
In addition, Boston ranks fourth nationwide for cities with the highest population density.
The top four noisiest cities in the United States are New York (1), Chicago (2), Jersey City (3) and Newark (4), according to the study. There were no other Massachusetts or New England cities on the list.
