Demario “Pop” Douglas has been a bright spot for the New England Patriots in a season that has been overshadowed by quarterback struggles and head coach questions. The rookie wide receiver surpassed Deion Branch’s 43 catches in 2002 when Douglas caught five passes to bring his total to 44 in New England’s Christmas Eve win over the Denver Broncos.
And with one game left in the 2023 season, Douglas, who has 47 catches after Week 17, has the chance to amass 50 catches.
On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” the Super Bowl XXXIX MVP joined MassLive’s Patriots columnist Karen Guregian to discuss Douglas breaking his record and offer some high praise of the rookie.
“How crazy,” Branch said. “… I love everything about the young man. I know Troy (Brown) is enjoying every bit of coaching him as well because I’m sure he can see some things in his own end that he saw in myself when I was studying under him. And for this young man to go out and have the rookie season that he’s having — I hope the young kid gets 50-55 catches. This will be amazing for him. … And now it’s all about pushing the bar up even higher. … I think they hit it on the nail when they selected this guy.”
Branch added that Douglas is a player who’s the complete package and “the sky’s the limit” for the rookie.
Douglas will get one more chance to add to his rookie season totals when the Patriots host the New York Jets on Sunday at Gillette Stadium to cap off an otherwise forgettable year.
