Until two years ago, an eighth-of-an-ounce of cannabis flower, a typical measuring unit and common dispensary purchase, could routinely sell for $50 or more at many Massachusetts pot shops.
The average price of an eighth sat at $45 as 2021 came to a close, according to state data. But within a year it had plummeted to $26. An eighth now goes for just $20 on average, continuing a remarkable two-year plunge that some industry observers say could continue, further straining cannabis business owners.
It was “almost like a kick in the teeth” to a lot of people in the industry, said Jennifer Ngo, the chief of staff at Bud’s Good, which has dispensaries in Worcester, Abington and Watertown.
