FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth Police Department released footage showing the moment a man opened fire inside of a bank and wounded an off-duty deputy, CBS Texas reported.
Surveillance video shows the man pacing around the lobby before pulling a handgun from his waistband. He can then be seen running to the desk where Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brent Brown was sitting.
The man, now identified as Leland Williams, 34, fired four shots at Brown, hitting him at least twice. After falling to the ground, Brown got up and returned 12 shots at Williams, who then fled the bank.
“Looking at what actually happened, we can speculate (which I don’t normally like to do), but I watched this myself, and I thought what could this person’s motives have been?” Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said. “All I can come up with is that he was there to rob the bank, saw the deputy as a threat and wanted to take him out first, and then rob the bank. Little did he know that he had a deputy who wasn’t gonna go down so easily.”
Police were able to arrest the suspect a few hours later, according to the report. Brown remains hospitalized following the Nov. 27 incident but is expected to recover. Williams is being charged with attempted capital murder.
