Route 3 reopens for morning commute after tanker truck spilled fuel on highway

Route 3 reopened Thursday morning after a tanker truck was involved in a rollover crash and spilled fuel on highway.

The tanker truck was carrying several thousand gallons of fuel when it was involved in the crash around 10 a.m. Wednesday, which included several vehicles. Both the north and southbound sides of Route 3 in North Billerica originally closed. Detours were in place by exit 76 on the northbound side and by exit 79 on the southbound.

The tanker was leaking fuel from the top of tank, which promoted a Hazmat and environmental response.

“Unfortunately, the volume is beyond what the side roads can handle and will be a problem well into the afternoon,” the Billerica Police Department said Wednesday.

Officials expected the highway to remain closed Thursday morning and would impact bus times. However, it has since been reopened.

MassDOT said the highway will close again around 10 a.m. for additional cleanup Thursday afternoon.
