6+ inches of snow is predicted in Mass. this week; here’s where

Just when it seemed like winter weather was a thing of the past, forecasters are warning that it’s not quite time to put your snow shovels and coats away. Snow is expected to fall in areas of the state this week.

A “robust low-pressure system” will move into the state overnight Wednesday and bring with it heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy, wet snow in higher elevations of the state like the Worcester Hills and The Berkshires.

“The most concerning aspect of this storm is the potential for 6+ inches of heavy wet snow that combined with strong winds could support downed powerlines and power outages,” forecasters at the National Weather Service said.

At this point, there is still uncertainty about exactly how much snow will fall, but forecasters warned that higher elevations might see snow totals exceeding eight inches. In lower elevations, forecasters said temperatures won’t drop low enough for any snow to really accumulate. Still, they said there is a chance of a light dusting in areas west of Interstate 95.

In Eastern Massachusetts, the precipitation is expected to fall as rain, with some showers expected as early as Tuesday night that may well continue for the rest of the work week.

In Central Massachusetts, some snow showers are expected early Wednesday morning, but the precipitation will largely fall as rain and little to no accumulation is expected on Wednesday. Wednesday night is when the area will likely see snow showers and accumulations of 1 to 2 inches.

In Springfield, the weather service is forecasting mostly rain, with little chance of snow this week. But, in other areas of Western Massachusetts, like The Berkshires, the story is very different.

Snow showers will begin in The Berkshires Wednesday morning and will likely continue on and off throughout the day before the snowfall begins in earnest Wednesday night. Snowfall and snow showers are expected to let up on Friday afternoon.

After a largely snow-free winter, there is a chance Boston could see its highest totals of the entire season this week.

“Should the storm develop far enough south, the heaviest snowstorm of the season could occur in Boston,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. “It may seem like winter finally showed up.”
