5 ways to celebrate Lunar New Year 2025 in Boston

Boston is helping people slither into the spirit of the Lunar New Year.

Lunar New Year 2025, which marks the start of the Year of the Snake in the 12-month lunar calendar, falls on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Celebrations typically last 16 days, concluding with the Lantern Festival on Feb. 12.

Boston hosts multiple Lunar New Year celebrations, from festivals and lion dances to tea demonstrations and chocolate tastings.

Below are fives ways to celebrate Lunar New Year in Boston.

Lion Dance Celebration at Mandarin, Oriental

The Mandarin Oriental hotel in Boston will kick off its Lunar New Year celebrations with a traditional Lion Dance at noon on Monday, Jan. 27. The Lion Dance will take place in the hotel’s main lobby and is open to the public. The address for Mandarin, Oriental is 776 Boylston St.

Lunar New Year menu at Red 8

Red 8 at Encore Boston Harbor will offer its Lunar New Year menu from Monday, Jan. 27 through Wednesday, Feb. 12. The multi-course menu includes dishes such as half peking duck, braised Chinese sea moss and pan-fried sweet Nian Gao. The menu is available for $188 per person. Red 8 is located at Encore Boston Harbor at One Broadway in Everett. The Cantonese restaurant is is open Monday through Thursday from 5–11 p.m., Friday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to midnight.

Lunar New Year Celebration at the MFA

Ring in the Year of the Snake at the Museum of Fine Arts by viewing the museum’s Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese collections on Thursday, Jan. 30. The museum will host several events that evening from a Chinese tea presentation to dance performances by S.T.A.R. Group. Entry after 5 p.m. is just $5.

Chinese New Year Lion Dance Parade & Cultural Event

Chinatown Main Street will host its indoor Chinese New Year Cultural Event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. The event will feature arts and crafts for children, calligraphy, live performances and traditional Lion Dance. The event is free and is located at the China Trade Center at 2 Boylston St.

L.A. Burdick Lunar New Year chocolates

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with L.A. Burdick’s Lunar New Year Collection. The collection features several chocolates inspired by traditional Asian flavors such as black sesame, red bean, plum wine, ginger root and green tea. The collection also highlights L.A. Burdick’s Chocolate Snakes, available exclusively for four weeks. The assortments range in price from $36 to $88. The chocolates can be purchased at L.A. Burdick’s locations in Back Bay, Harvard Square and Brookline or online. L.A.
