As boys hockey teams head into the hearts of their schedules, MassLive wants to highlight some of the top games to watch each week.
Whether it’s a potential milestone captured, a bout between two longtime rivals, or two streaking teams facing off, our staff will share the top contests to get out to and when and where they’re taking place.
For this week, Jan. 12-18, here are three Catholic Conference boys hockey games to watch.
Saint John’s Shrewsbury (7-2) at Malden Catholic (2-4-1), Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Malden Valley Forum
Saint John’s may be the hottest boys hockey team in all of Massachusetts. After starting the year 1-2, the Pioneers have won six games in a row including three in conference play.
On the other side, although the Lancers don’t have the same number of wins, they’ve shown they can beat the Pioneers.
Last year, when these two squads played in Malden, it was Malden Catholic that came out on top, 5-3.
The Lancers are also coming off their first Catholic Conference win of the year, over the BC high Eagles on Sunday.
St. John’s Prep (4-2-2) at Xaverian (8-1), Wednesday at 5:10 p.m. at the Canton Ice House
Both the Eagles and the Hawks are looking at this game as a chance to get right. Prep has lost two games in a row, for the first time since New Year’s Day, 2025, and Xaverian suffered its first loss to Saint John’s Saturday night in overtime.
On Wednesday, both of these squads are sure to come out firing.
Catholic Memorial (8-1-1) at Xaverian (8-1), Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Canton Ice House
After the Hawks play the Eagles, they’ll have to host another one of the best boys hockey teams in the state in the Knights.
After falling to Saint John’s, Catholic Memorial has won three straight games with a goal differential of +11 over that span.
