25 states are increasing minimum wage in 2024; here’s which ones

This is the final week of 2023, and the first payday of 2024 is just around the corner.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour for non-exempt employees and has been since 2009. That represents the longest stretch the federal minimum wage has remained unchanged since it was established in 1938, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor.

At the state level, there are 20 states as of this year that are subject to the federal minimum wage: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

It will be the same next year — none of those states are implementing minimum wage increases in 2024.

Other states and the District of Columbia have laws that have increased the minimum wage.

Massachusetts has among the highest minimum wage in the country at $15 per hour, but the state’s minimum wage is not among those increasing in 2024.

Washington state has the highest minimum wage for any U.S. state. In 2023, it increased from $14.49 to $15.74 per hour. It’s adjusted annually based on a set formula, which means it’ll increase to $16.28 on Jan. 1, 2024.
