A 17-year-old boy was found dead at a lake in Gilford, New Hampshire, according to a press release from state police.
Officials received a 911 call on Friday at around 12:48 p.m. for a person who had gone missing into the water and “failed to resurface” in Lake Winnipesaukee, the statement reads. The incident occurred in the area known as the “Broads” near Diamond and Rattlesnake Islands.
Marine Patrol officers responded and located a boat with three women on board. They said the 17-year-old entered the water to recover a bag that had fallen overboard and was struggling to swim due to the “rough water conditions caused by strong winds.” He “eventually submerged and did not resurface,” state police reported.
An initial search was conducted by members of Marine Patrol, the Gilford Fire Department and the Alton Fire Department, but the teen was unable to be located. The New Hampshire Fish & Game Dive Unit also responded to assist in the search.
By 7:02 p.m., the dive team found and recovered the teenager’s body, according to the statement.
The name of the teenager is being withheld and an autopsy has been scheduled.
The initial investigation indicated this was a drowning, however all aspects of the incident still remain under investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the incident are asked to contact Sgt. Seth Alie of Marine Patrol by email at Seth.P.Alie@dos.nh.gov or by phone at 603-227-2117.
