10 critical care patients had to be transported after Mass. hospital flooded

Multiple critical care patients had to be taken to new hospitals after 4 feet of water was found in the boiler room in a hospital in Marlborough.

The UMass Memorial Medical Center in Marlborough evacuated more than 70 patients, including 10 critical care patients, after a large valve break caused flooding that affected the boiler system and disrupted heat to multiple areas of the facility, according to hospital officials.

The campus went under Code Black and halted new ambulance arrivals to the Emergency Department.

The valve issue was resolved and water removal and mitigation efforts continue, officials said Monday morning. No injuries were reported.

The Marlborough campus remains open to walk-in emergency patients and those admitted will be transferred to another facility. Patients may also seek care at other local emergency departments.

During this time, surrounding hospitals are experiencing higher patient volumes and longer wait times in their Emergency Departments, according to the Berlin Fire Department.

“We ask that this not deter you from seeking immediate medical attention or dialing 911 if necessary,” the fire department wrote.

The campus will remain closed for inpatient services until further notice.

Mammography remains open for outpatient services, but all other outpatient services are closed on Monday and Tuesday and patients will be rescheduled.

Closures include:

  • UMass Memorial Cancer Center — Marlborough
  • Community Medical Group Practices
  • Cardiac Rehab
  • Partial Hospitalization Program
  • Outpatient Radiology and Lab Services
