Yankees blunders made Red Sox legend want to go out for ‘big steak’ dinner

David Ortiz isn’t shy about his disdain for the New York Yankees, so it’s no surprise he took a shot at the team when an opportunity presented itself.

The Boston Red Sox legend interviewed Baltimore Orioles’ Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson prior to the 2024 Home Run Derby on Monday night — about 24 hours after the O’s earned a walk-off win on an Alex Verdugo miscue. Ortiz quickly brought it up, and couldn’t help but hide how it made him feel.

“Then I watched the Yankees lose. Nothing made me more happier than that,” he said on FOX. “You guys coming from behind and whoop them. That made me want to go out for a nice dinner, a big steak.”

Clips of the Yankees’ blunders during the game were shown while Ortiz was chatting with the two Orioles All-Stars. The one that cost New York the game, though, was from Verdugo. The former Red Sox outfielder came in too quickly for a fly ball that ended up going over his head. Verdugo tripped trying to turn around as the Orioles secured the 6-5 win.

“I saw it coming my way,” he told reporters after the game. “I took a step in, and that little step in was enough to beat me. I was just trying to catch up ground that I gave away on the initial step. I was trying to do anything I can to get to it. … I take a lot of pride out there defensively. This one’s on me.”

Sunday’s loss was just another reminder of the struggles that have plagued New York, but the struggles likely have been something Ortiz has enjoyed watching.
