Worcester Red Sox drop road series opener to RailRiders

The Worcester Red Sox fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 8-4, on Tuesday at PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania.

Nick Sogard put Worcester on the board in the first inning with a home run over the left field wall.

Brad Keller started for Worcester on the mound and had a perfect first inning while picking up a strikeout. Jorge Benitez took over in the second inning and immediately struggled. Two walks, a double steal and wild pitch tied up the game for the RailRiders.

Following a RBI groundout and three hits, two of which were doubles, the RailRiders led, 4-1. Benitez rebounded and got through the third inning without giving up additional runs before giving the ball to Naoyuki Uwasawa to begin the fourth.

Worcester quickly got itself into a bases loaded situation.

Brandon Lockridge hit a RBI single to make it a 5-1 game, then Agustin Ramirez’s two-run single gave the hosts a six-run lead. Ramirez drove home another run in the sixth inning with a RBI single, giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre an 8-1 lead.

Worcester had just four hits on Tuesday. Despite a slow first six innings, the team’s offense started to come alive in the seventh.

With one out, Mickey Gasper picked up his third hit of the game and was followed by Nathan Hickey’s single to right. After a wild pitch moved Gasper and Hickey into scoring position, Eddy Alvarez brought them in with a double. Chase Meidroth added to the scoring with a RBI single, but that was all Worcester could string together before the final out.

The WooSox and RailRiders will continue their seven-game series with a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 5:05 p.m.
